At the 4th grade level students are ready to progress past sight words and move on to some higher projected vocabulary. Students start to see industrial words for the first time as they realize there are actually different places to work than just a school or where their parents work. If you look at each of these word walls you will quickly realize that the longer words are presented with less words. 4th Grade is the first time students are seeing new vocabulary words that are in some what of a tiered system. The first tier being basic words that they see every day (fair, frown, quiz). Then there are high frequency words that appear in academic language (outgoing, satisfied, encyclopedia). Then there are low or even very low frequency words (withdrawn, pleasurable) that students will rarely see and limited as to their use.

4th Grade Word Wall Words
Before we get to the list of 4th grade word wall words, we must recap how word walls efficiently enhance the students' vocabulary. It is a method in which looking at the words, and their spellings can make an imprint on young minds, and since the wall stays up for a year by looking at it repeatedly, the words become part of the picture memory.
To help you set up a word wall in your class, we have skillfully created a list that includes words from all the basic subjects taught in the class. To make it clearer, we have categorized them here in alphabetical order. We do suggest you can use different styles of cards or colors for each subject as well.
My advice with these word walls is to post them weekly. Adding six to ten new vocabulary words every week should be commonplace for grade 4 students. The more experience students get with these words, the easier it will be for them. This is usually the last school aged year that students use Word Walls. Many teachers start to just assign words to students on their own and just keep the words available in the room as a reminder for themselves more than for the students. Believe me, I always found them as a helpful reminder just for my self as I went through the day. The vocabulary here is more difficult, not just to spell and pronounce, but to fully understand and take in within our realm of thinking and owning.
